1. BE MINDFUL OF SMELLS AROUND YOU.

You can improve your sense of smell by simply being mindful of the smells around you. Make a conscious effort to be aware of smells you t

We should all enjoy what life has to offer through our 5 senses. Here are a few simple tricks to help!

1. BE MINDFUL OF SMELLS AROUND YOU.

You can improve your sense of smell by simply being mindful of the smells around you. Make a conscious effort to be aware of smells you typically ignore. Journal notes of any smells that strike you as unusual or exciting. Purposely sniff a strong fragrance throughout the day to enhance your sense of smell. This could even be spices with a strong aroma, garlic, or an onion. Essential oils and vapors like menthol, peppermint, and eucalyptus are small and convenient to take on the go. 

2. EAT FOODS WITH ANTIOXIDANTS FOR VISION.

Diets rich in antioxidants can heighten your senses for better eyesight. Antioxidant-rich foods include:

  • Fruits-      cranberries, strawberries, cherries, pears, and oranges
  • Vegetables-      broccoli, spinach, carrots, avocados, and sweet potatoes
  • Spices-      cinnamon, oregano, cumin, parsley, and basil
  • Herbs- such      as sage, thyme, peppermint, and oregano
  • Nuts-      almonds, pistachios, walnuts, and cashews
  • Drinks-      apple juice, cider, and tomato juice 

3. Stop smoking for a better sense of smell, taste, and sight.

Smoking causes a lot of damage to our health, not to mention, affects our senses immensely. It is detrimental to our taste buds, hearing, and eyesight. Easier said than done, quitting is very beneficial and will improve senses that have been damaged from smoking.

4. Exercise for smell and sound.

Exercise is beneficial in so many ways, therefore, it’s naturally on our list of ways to heighten senses. It doesn’t require intense physical activity, but simple exercise movements can do so much for your senses. Simple  cardio, and aerobics can improve smell due to increased blood flow that can clear nasal passages.

Hearing can also be improved through exercise. This added blood circulation strengthens nerve functions which allows our auditory cortex to process sound better.

5. Use your eyesight and focus for touch.

Have you ever fallen asleep on your arm and woken up to a tingling sensation? This is an interference in your sense of touch and can be extremely uncomfortable.

Your touch sensation can be disrupted for several reasons including conditions like diabetes, the aftermath of a stroke, or a side effect of chemotherapy. It can also simply happen with age.

You can improve this by using your “eyesight and focus” to practice using your sense of touch. Start getting touchy-feely more and pay close attention to what you’re touching. Look at it, focus on it, and think about what it feels like.

This is something you can practice at just about any given time during the day. Do it when petting your dog, getting a massage, or taking a shower.

Eating a wide variety of healthy foods helps to keep you in good health and protects you against chronic disease. Eating a well-balanced diet means eating a variety of foods from each of the 5 food groups daily, in the recommended amounts.
Simple swaps and a little bit of pre- planning can help you make life-long, healthy changes to your diet.
SHOP FOR HEALTHY FOODS

  • Make a list and plan your meals.
  • Choose lean meat cuts, wild salmon, and skinless chicken and turkey.
  • Limit fast foods, chips, pastries and pies, which all contain large amounts of sugars and saturated fats.

SWITCH TO HEALTHY FATS

  • Limit processed foods to minimize hidden fats.
  • Add raw nuts, seeds, fish, organic butter, and avocado to your diet. These healthy fats have other wonderful nutrients.
  • Add healthy oils such as olive, coc0nut, and avocado oils when cooking. 

RETAIN THE NUTIENT VALUE IN FOODS.

To minimize nutrient losses:

  • Scrub vegetables rather than peel them.
  • Steam vegetables instead of boiling them.
  • Include more stir-fry recipes in your diet. Stir-fried vegetables are cooked quickly to retain their crunch and nutrients.

REDUCE SALT.

  • Don’t automatically add salt to your food – taste it first.
  • Choose fresh or frozen vegetables, rather than canned and/or pickled.
  • Limit salty processed meats and foods such as flavored instant noodles, canned or dehydrated soup mixes, salty crackers, chips and salted nuts.
  • Reduce your use of soy sauce, tomato sauce and processed sauces, and condiments.

ADD FLAVOR WITH HERBS AND SPICES.

  • Try some coriander, ginger, garlic, chili, and lemongrass with vegetables for a quick, healthy and delicious stir-fry.

KEEP IN MIND:

  • Making small, gradual changes to your diet (rather than restrictive eating or crash diets) will help you adopt healthy eating habits for life.
